I have an HP8630 all in one printer/scanner.  The screen on the printer says there is an original paper jammed in the automatic document feeder.

Firstly I never have used the automatic document feeder and secondly, I have just about taken this printer apart looking for any signs of paper jammed anywhere.  I have shut it off, put it back on. disconnected the plug from the back and also from the power source.

This first appeared the other day when I replaced the ink cartridges.  So I removed them and reinserted them thinking maybe that would help but, nothing.

Hope someone has a suggestion.

Thank you,

Shirley

Hi @Shirley1942,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the error message indicating a jam in the automatic document feeder (ADF) on your HP Officejet Pro 8630 can be quite frustrating, especially when there doesn't seem to be any visible jam. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check the ADF Thoroughly

  • Open the ADF Cover: Open the cover of the ADF and carefully check for any small pieces of paper or debris that might be stuck. Sometimes, even tiny fragments can cause a jam error.
  • Inspect the Paper Path: Look through the entire paper path, including the entry and exit points of the ADF. Use a flashlight to get a better view if necessary.

2. Clean the ADF Rollers and Sensors

  • Turn Off the Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source before proceeding.
  • Locate the Rollers: Find the ADF rollers and clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Gently rotate the rollers to clean them completely.
  • Clean the Sensors: Look for any sensors inside the ADF and carefully clean them using a dry, lint-free cloth. Sensors can sometimes get blocked by dust or paper particles.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect the Power: Unplug the printer from the power source and wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and Restart: Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal sensors and clear any false error messages.

4. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP website or through the printer's software on your computer.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn Off the Printer: With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug from Power Source: Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait and Reconnect: Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging the power cord back into the wall outlet and then back into the printer.
  • Turn On the Printer: Turn the printer back on and check if the error message is resolved.

6. Reinstall Ink Cartridges Correctly

  • Remove and Reinsert Cartridges: Since the error appeared after replacing the ink cartridges, try removing and then reinserting them to ensure they are properly seated.

7. Factory Reset (if applicable)

  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, perform a factory reset on your printer. Be aware that this will reset all settings to their factory defaults. Refer to the printer’s manual or HP support for instructions specific to your model.

Refer to this document: HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One Printer series User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
