Hi @momplaskey,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP ENVY Inspire 7958e All-in-One Printer shows a paper jam error, but there’s no visible jam and the carriage won’t move. This is often caused by a false sensor trigger, carriage obstruction, or firmware glitch. Let’s walk through the most effective steps to resolve it.

Fix: Paper Jam Error with Carriage Not Moving – HP ENVY Inspire 7958e

1. Power Reset the Printer

This clears false errors and resets internal sensors:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. While unplugged, open the ink access door and gently try to move the carriage left and right.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

2. Check for Obstructions

Even a tiny scrap of paper or packaging material can block the carriage:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the entire carriage path.
  • Remove any visible debris, paper bits, or ink buildup.
  • Check the paper input tray and rear access door (if available) for jammed paper.

3. Manually Move the Carriage

If the carriage is stuck:

  • Gently push it left and right with the printer unplugged.
  • Do not force it if it resists; there may be a mechanical lock or obstruction.

4. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or residue can cause false jam errors:

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Clean the rollers inside the rear access area and the input tray.
  • Let them dry for 10 minutes before powering on.

5. Update Firmware via HP App

If the printer powers on but still shows the error:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
