Hi @diveatdawn

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you are facing issues with the printer displaying an error as "carriage jam" thatcan be frustrating, especially when there appears to be nothing physically obstructing the carriage path. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot as these are the generic steps.  I would request you to please share your Printer Model and the picture of the Error Displayed.

Power Cycle

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and restart. Sometimes this clears false jam errors.

Check the Carriage Path

  • Open the printer access door.
  • Gently move the carriage (where the ink cartridges sit) left and right.
  • Check for Small bits of paper stuck inside.
  • Dust or ink buildup.
  • Loose foreign objects (clips, labels, etc.).

Clean the Carriage & Rollers

  • Use a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Wipe the carriage path and rollers.
  • Avoid using alcohol or harsh cleaners.

Check Cartridge Seating

  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Reinsert them firmly until they click into place.
  • Misaligned cartridges can trigger jam errors..

Factory Reset

  • On touchscreen: Setup → Service → Restore Factory Settings.
  • Reconfigure Wi‑Fi and preferences from scratch.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
