Hi @sfields1959,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP DeskJet 4255e All-in-One printer is having issues with the feed roller, and you’re unsure how to access it. Let’s go through the steps to inspect and clean or replace it.

1. Turn Off the Printer

Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.

Wait a few minutes to ensure it is fully powered down.

2. Access the Paper Path

Open the input tray and remove any loaded paper.

Open the rear access door (or back panel) if your model has one.

For most DeskJet 4255e models, the feed rollers are located along the paper path inside the input tray area and sometimes behind the rear door.

3. Inspect the Feed Rollers

Look for dirt, dust, or paper debris on the rollers.

Spin the rollers gently with your fingers to check for wear or smooth spots.

If the rollers are worn out, they may need to be replaced.

4. Clean the Rollers

Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

Gently wipe the rollers while turning them to clean the entire surface.

Let them dry completely before closing the printer.

5. Check for Obstructions

Inspect the paper path for any small pieces of paper or debris that may be stuck and causing feed issues.

6. Reassemble and Test

Close all doors and trays.

Plug the printer back in and load paper.

Print a test page to confirm the feed issue is resolved.

I hope this helps.

Thank You for your reply.  The Model I have is an HP 4255E.  This is designed a bit different than others I have had, it is difficult to get at the rollers.  Also, I am not sure what this is for, but there is a small door on the bottom of the unit that can be accessed, but it doesn't look like rollers, looks like small panels, I am confused.

Hi @sfields1959,

Thank you for getting back to us and for sharing the details about your HP DeskJet 4255e. I understand it can be a bit tricky with this newer design. Don’t worry, we’ll guide you through it.

The small door you see on the bottom is a service access panel, it’s mainly used for clearing paper jams and isn’t where the main feed rollers are located.

Here’s what you can try next:

Power Off and Unplug
Make sure the printer is completely powered down and unplugged before you start.

Front Input Tray Area

Pull out the input tray and remove any paper.

Shine a flashlight inside; the feed/pickup rollers for this model are usually just above the paper path at the back of the tray opening.

Rear Access (if equipped)

Some 4255e units have a small rear door or a plastic cover that can be gently pressed inward to open.

Behind it, you can often reach the secondary rollers that help pull the paper through.

Cleaning the Rollers

Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth (or cotton swab) with distilled water.

Gently rotate the rollers with your fingers while wiping their surface.

Let them dry completely before closing everything up.

Test the Printer

Re-assemble, plug in the printer, load paper, and run a test print.

If it’s still hard to access the rollers or if the rollers appear worn or smooth, you may want to have the unit serviced by an HP-authorized repair center.

I hope this helps.
