printer will not respond. One help video required removing the ink cartridges but the holder for the cartridges does not move.

Hi @Lost25-

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly—and I truly regret the disruption this has caused. Error code 0x6100004a typically points to a mechanical fault, often involving the carriage assembly, paper path, or printhead alignment. When the cartridge holder won’t move and the printer is unresponsive, it can feel like you're locked out of even basic troubleshooting.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery path to help restore functionality.

Step-by-Step Recovery for Error Code 0x6100004a

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

This clears firmware glitches and resets the carriage logic:

  • Leave the printer powered on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power the printer back on and wait for the startup sequence to complete.

2. Inspect for Hidden Paper Debris

Even tiny fragments can trigger a false jam:

  • Open all access doors, including the rear and input tray.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the paper path and carriage track.
  • Gently remove any visible debris or torn paper.
  • Check the service station area (far right side) where cartridges park.

3. Free the Cartridge Carriage (Safely)

If the carriage is stuck:

  • Power off and unplug the printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently try to slide the carriage toward the center. If it resists, avoid forcing it.
  • Spray a small amount of compressed air around the carriage rod to clear dust or dried ink buildup.

4. Clean Cartridge Contacts and Vents

Blocked contacts can trigger system errors:

  • Remove cartridges if accessible.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to clean the copper contacts on the cartridges and inside the carriage.
  • Let everything dry for 5 minutes before reinserting.

5. Update Firmware (if accessible)

If the printer powers on:

If the issue persists after these steps, the problem may lie in the carriage motor, encoder strip, or printhead assembly, which would require service intervention. I truly regret the inconvenience this has caused—especially when you're trying to follow instructions and the printer won’t cooperate.

Let me know how far you get with these steps, and I’ll guide you further if needed. You deserve a reliable and responsive device.
