HP Color Laser MFP 178nw
Microsoft Windows 11

Paper stuck inside, it folded itself 8 och 9 times.

Opening machine and pulling paper carefully top and back, ripped the paper off at both ends.

The folded 1/4 by 7 inch piece remain in the machine.

It's stuck between a red role and black tube-shaped plastic cover protecting it.

Can I get this out, without disassembling the whole machine?

Please, advice!

Hi @PEM15

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When paper is severely stuck inside the HP Color Laser MFP 178nw printer and parts are ripped off, it can be challenging to remove without disassembling the printer.

However, you can try the following steps to remove the remaining paper without completely disassembling the machine:

Steps to Remove Stuck Paper:

Turn Off and Unplug the Printer:

  • Ensure that the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source to prevent any electrical hazards.

Open Access Panels:

  • Open the front cover and any other accessible areas of the printer, including the toner cartridge area and the rear door, if applicable.

Locate the Paper Path:

  • Carefully locate the paper path and assess where the paper is stuck. You mentioned it’s between a red roller and a black tube.

Use Tweezers or a Flat Object:

  • Use a pair of long tweezers or a flat object like a ruler to gently reach in and grasp the edge of the stuck paper piece.
  • If accessible from a different angle, try to gently pull the paper out, taking care not to damage any internal components.

Manual Rotation:

  • Sometimes manually rotating the rollers (if accessible) can help in dislodging the paper. Rotate the rollers in the direction they usually move during printing to ease out the paper.

Check for Release Mechanisms:

  • Some printers have levers or tabs within the paper path that can help release pressure from rollers. Check if your printer has any release mechanisms.

Close and Test the Printer:

  • After removal, close all panels, reinsert any removed cartridges, and plug in the printer.
  • Print a test page to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

If the Paper Cannot Be Removed:

Professional Assistance: If these steps do not help, it might be necessary to seek professional service for removal to avoid damaging the printer further.

HP Support: Contact HP customer support over the phone for guidance or to arrange for service. They may provide additional troubleshooting steps tailored to your specific situation.

Attempting to forcefully remove paper or disassemble parts can lead to further damage, so proceed cautiously and seek professional assistance if needed.
