M180nw printer error message: tray 1 is overfilled when it is not. i have followed previous solution recommendations to disconnect power, wait 2 minutes, press power button for 30 sec, plug back into wall outlet and connect power cord to printer. printer starts again but error persists, first saying there is a jam (but there isn't) then that tray 1 is overfilled. tried copying and it did scan but did not print the copy.

Hi @wcb949,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message indicating that Tray 1 is overfilled when it is not can be frustrating. Here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue.
Check for Physical Obstructions and Paper Quality:
- Remove All Paper: Take out all the paper from Tray 1 and ensure there are no small pieces of paper, dust, or other obstructions inside the tray or feed area.
- Inspect Paper Quality: Ensure the paper is not curled, damaged, or of the wrong size. Only use paper that meets the printer's specifications.
Clean the Paper Feed Rollers:
- Locate the Rollers: Open the printer and locate the paper feed rollers. These are usually accessible from the paper tray area or by opening a service door.
- Clean the Rollers: Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to clean the rollers. Rotate the rollers manually to clean the entire surface. Allow them to dry completely before using the printer.
Reset the Printer:
- Turn Off the Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off.
- Disconnect All Cables: Unplug the power cord and any other connected cables (USB, network).
- Wait: Leave the printer disconnected for at least 5 minutes to ensure a full reset.
- Reconnect: Plug in the power cord and other cables, then turn the printer back on.
Check the Paper Tray Sensors:
- Inspect Tray Sensors: There are usually small sensors in the paper tray that detect the presence and level of paper. Ensure these sensors are not stuck or obstructed.
- Clean Sensors: Use compressed air to gently clean around the sensors to remove any dust or debris.
Firmware Update:
- Check for Updates: Visit the HP support website to check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model.
- Install Updates: If available, follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn Off the Printer: Again, ensure the printer is turned off.
- Press and Hold Power Button: With the printer off, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect Power: Plug the power cord back into the printer while still holding the power button. Release the button after plugging in.
Test with Different Paper:
- Try Different Paper: Sometimes, using a different type of paper can help. Ensure it is within the printer's specifications.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP M180nw printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
