Why does the tray for receiving the printed material not slide all the way out?  I can print without things getting hurled to the floor but they stay at an funny angle and are not flat. Why isn't the tray proper to get the printed pages to just be flat?  Or is my tray defective? It looks like it can't possibly pull out all the way,  unlike in my old HP8710 printer.

Hi @Polly88,

I understand your printer’s output tray is not extending fully and printed pages are resting at an angle. Let’s go through a few checks to understand and resolve this behavior.

    a. Confirm Output Tray Setup
Make sure the output tray is pulled out fully until it stops naturally.
Some models have a limited extension by design and will not slide out completely like older models.

    b. Check for Paper Catch/Extender
Look for a flip-out paper extender at the end of the output tray (a small flap or arm).
Pull or flip this extender outward—this helps printed pages stay flat and prevents them from curling or sliding off.

    c. Inspect for Obstructions or Misalignment
Check if any packaging material, paper debris, or plastic tabs are blocking the tray’s full movement.
Ensure the tray slides evenly without tilting or resistance.

    d. Compare with Design
Many newer HP models are designed with compact output trays that do not extend fully forward like previous series (such as OfficeJet Pro 8710).
As long as the tray locks in position and holds paper securely with the extender opened, it is functioning as intended.

    e. When to Consider Improper Fit or Damage
If the tray appears loose, crooked, cracked, or unable to support paper even with the extender open, this could indicate a misaligned or damaged output tray component.
In that case, avoid forcing it further to prevent damage.

    f. Final Step
Once the output tray and paper extender are properly positioned, try printing a few sheets to see if they rest flat and exit without falling or bending.

I hope this helps.
