I had a paper jam in my HP Officejet Pro 6978.  After I fixed it, I keep getting an error message "remove any jammed paper and make sure the paper tray is installed properly."  It is installed properly as far as I can tell.  What do I do?

@JeanieCMartin, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 continues to display the "remove any jammed paper and make sure the paper tray is installed properly" error message even after clearing a paper jam, follow these steps:

Power Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 1-2 minutes before plugging the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and check if the error message persists.

Check for hidden paper:

  • Make sure there are no tiny bits of paper still stuck inside the printer. Open all access doors and visually inspect the interior, including:
    • Input tray: Remove the tray and check for any obstructions.
    • Duplexer: Open the duplexer (if your printer has one) to check for paper jams.
    • Rear access: Remove the rear access door or panel and check for any paper bits.
  • Carefully remove any found paper by pulling it out in the direction of the paper path to avoid tears.

Reset the printer:

  • After ensuring all paper has been removed, perform a printer reset.
  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Check the paper path for obstructions:

  • Ensure there are no foreign objects blocking the paper path.
  • If necessary, gently use a flashlight to inspect hard-to-see areas inside the printer.

Clean the rollers:

  • Dirty or damaged rollers can cause paper jam messages.
  • Clean the rollers located in the input tray and the rear of the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Ensure the rollers are free from dirt or debris.

Reload Paper and Reinstall the Tray:

  • Remove the paper stack from the input tray and check that the paper is not wrinkled or stuck together.
  • Fan out the paper stack to separate the sheets.
  • Reload the paper into the input tray, ensuring it's correctly aligned and not overfilled.
  • Reinsert the paper tray securely into the printer.
