The HP printer wouldn't print from multiple divices, so trying to fix it I hit something in the Printers & Scanners window, and the printer disappeared from that window. I tried to reinstall it with the original disc, but it won't work with my operating system. Now what? On line all the 8600's have extra numbers and letters, so I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have gone through your Post and I would like to help
Since you could not print from multiple devices, we will Reset the Network Settings on the Printer and connect it back to your Wireless and Re-Add the printer to the Mac Printing Queue using Airprint
First ensure your Mac has all the latest updates. You can refer to this Link: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201541
Next download the Printer Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers if you have a USB cable.
1. From the printer control panel, touch and slide your finger across the screen, touch Setup, and then touch Network Setup. 2. Touch Restore Network Defaults, and then touch Yes. A message appears stating that the network defaults have been restored. 3. Touch OK
Then run the Wireless Setup Wizard to connect the printer back to your Network
1. From the printer control panel display, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup. 2. Touch Network Setup. 3. Touch Wireless Settings. 4. Touch Wireless Setup Wizard. 5. Follow the display instructions to complete the setup.
Once the printer is connected back to your Network, Re-Add the printer back to the Mac printing Queue using Airprint
-
Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window
-
Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.
-
If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.
-
If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
-
-
Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.

Thank you KrazyToad!
I worked through the process without luck, then the following day our phone didn't work. My husband called, they reset something, and his printer started spitting out documents that were in the que. Then I tried my printer, and it reinstalled - according to your instructions. Thank you!!
