Well, I have solved my problem, perhaps in an unorthodox manner.  I have successfully installed my Deskjet 2755e printer using the Deskjet 2130 driver.  As far as I can tell, the 2130 printer doesn't have wifi capability, nor does it have the bells and whistles that connect to HP ink automatic ink supply feature.  But I'm happy, since it both scans and prints via a USB cable connection, which is what I wanted.  If you have the same problem and want to give it a try, when the installation program wants to load a driver, uncheck the box that will get one automatically.  Then click the windows update option to get more drivers, and find the HP DJ 2130 series driver:

After the driver installation, your printer will appear in the Printers and Scanners list as an HP Deskjet 2130 series printer.  The wrong name is a small price to pay for a working printer!  The HP Deskjet 2700 series printer is what gets automatically installed if you let the system choose the driver.  It will scan only.
