I have an HP Officejet Pro 8620.  When I try to print I get the error message - printhead not detected, failed or missing.  I have had this before, though a long time ago, and usually turning the printer on and off and restarting my computer has resolved the issue.  I have done both and still get the message.

I printed last week without an issue.

Hi @AJL73,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing a printhead error on your HP Officejet Pro 8620. Printhead errors can occur due to various reasons, such as clogged printheads, damaged printheads, or connectivity issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to try and resolve the issue.

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 1-2 minutes, and then plug it back in. Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Go to the HP website and look for the latest firmware update for your Officejet Pro 8620. If there is an update available, follow the instructions to install it.
  • Inspect Printheads: Open the printer cover and access the printhead area. Check if the printheads are properly seated in their slots and that there are no visible signs of damage or blockages.
  • Clean the Printheads: If you suspect that the printheads are clogged, you can try cleaning them to improve print quality. Most HP printers have a built-in cleaning utility that you can access through the printer's settings or control panel. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to initiate the printhead cleaning process.
  • Replace Printheads: If cleaning the printheads doesn't resolve the error, you may need to consider replacing them. HP Officejet Pro 8620 printers typically use individual printhead cartridges that can be replaced separately. Ensure you use genuine HP printheads to maintain optimal performance.
  • Check for Paper Jams: Sometimes, a paper jam or obstruction in the paper path can trigger a printhead error. Check for any paper jams or debris in the printer and remove them carefully.
  • Reset the Printer: If the error persists, you can try performing a full reset of the printer. This will reset the printer to its default settings and may clear any temporary glitches. Instructions for resetting the Officejet Pro 8620 can be found in the printer's manual or on the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
