Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer is connected by usb 2.0 cable to pc. It had problems printing for a year but switch off/on always worked to get print job done. However a few weeks ago it basically says forget it. When it is in a good mood, after the xx check by scan doctor it may work for one print job but then stops again.

Conclusion: printer is fine, albeit over 10 years old. It must be the interface with windows creating problems. Have tried all the solutions on the various HP sites but to no avail.

Who can help? I don't want to buy another printer when current printer hardware still appears to be ok.

Hello @TheoJK ,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!

The HP software must be completely uninstalled and removed of the system.

First download only this complete package: "HP LaserJet M1536 Full Feature Software and Driver ",
Release date: Mar 8, 2021

1) File name: hp_M1530_MFP_full_Solution_15189.exe (172.6 MB)

Then proceed as follows:

Check the system for

  • TuneUp`s
  • Optimization Tools
  • Cleanup Tools

disable them, better uninstall them. Next...

  1. Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN, WiFi and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
Read this information: Uninstall the HP software, drivers, and apps used with HP printers.

  2. right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Programs and Features"
uninstall all HP printer software > via "Programs and Features"
  3. right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Devices and Printers"
In the "Devices and Printers" window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  4. Restart the PC
  5. Close all programs
  6. Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"

    OK
  7. search for "HP [printer name]" and delete all this folders
  8. Empty the TEMP folders
    A) C:\Users\[Your user account]\AppData\Local\Temp\
    B) C:\Windows\Temp\
  9. system files cannot be deleted!
  10. Reconnect the printer to the power supply and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically)
  11. Please note: WLAN has to be deactivated!
  12. Restart the PC
  13. Close all programs
  14. Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads
    double- click on the  hp_M1530_MFP_full_Solution_15189.exe.
  15. The installation was completed successfully, now you must ...
  16. Restart the PC again  <<< must be, is important
  17. Now the installation is complete.

Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner.

Document error messages accurately, even better is to take a screenshot of it and upload here.

Important information:

Change back the File Explorer settings -
    • enable > Don`t show hidden files, folders or drives
    • click button > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you. It is close to midnght where I live in Europe. Will try the solution tomorrow. Had tried earlier uninstall/install with and without Scan doctor. This looks a more thorough cleansing of possible problem software/ connections. Will let you know whether it works.

Unfortunately the procedure outlined doesn't work. After completing all steps it said printer offline. Turned it off/on again but, like before, did not print the requested page.

I was careful to follow the steps as outlined, however to no avail. Maybe the printer is too old and should be retired (warranty expired in 2012).

Hi Theo,

I still have a few questions.

  1. No error messages?
  2. No information in the control panel?
  3. Was another USB cable used?
  4. Print the event log via the ToolboxFX, is that possible?

It did cost me too much time to repair. This afternoon, I've bought a new HP laserjet printer. Just installed it and it works. Finally no worries and no time (many many hours over the last week) to spend on trying to fix something.

Thanks for all the support.
