I have this same problem on 2 different Macs. Both of them are running Catalina. I also reinstalled the drivers from the HP site but they had expired certificates. I installed them anyway (bad idea) but it didn't help. Has anyone found a solution? Should I go buy a new non-HP printer?

I have exactly the same problem, first when I connected my printer with usb to my Mac, it appears that there is a malware thing, then I try to uninstall and install it, it says that the certificate is expired, and shows '
'
I hope Hp or Apple can fix it immediately.. changing a printer is just a waste of money and time..

This suggestion (from 2019!) is not a real solution. I have a printer supporting AirPrint, and there the problem did not appear. From my point of view, the problem appears only older printers, like my Deskjet 6980, which do NOT support AirPrint. I cannot understand what has caused the failure, since it appears on computers where no updates to any software were made. From one day to the other, printing does not work anymore, I get the "filter failed" message, and the recommendation to reinstall the driver. Reinstalling the latest driver, resetting the printing system etc. does not help at all. The printing hardware itself is working fine, it can print a test page. Very strange bug, please help!

One more piece of information for this mysterious problem: Another older Macbook with Mojave 10.14.6 gives an error message (in very fine print) that it cannot access some spool directory in /var/tmp/, then starts to actually print the right number of pages, but all pages are empty.
I also tried to install the Generic PCL driver, with a similar result: Starts the printing process, but pages are empty.

This driver is probably extremely outdated. It says it was uploaded in August 2020, but the file itself is from 2017, and after installation the printer preferences dialog reports the version number 4.0.5. Maybe somebody at HP uploaded the wrong file?
