I'm having the exact same problem in using my Ink Tank 315 with my MacBook Air M1. I've installed the software you suggest. But I don't understand the steps following that. What does it mean to "choose the software"? Thank you in advance.

after adding printer, look at the bottom options. There should be "add software". Click on it and go on.

I come from another topic (same problem with HP Ink Tank 319 in Macbook Intel Processor)It works also for HP Ink Tank 319 and in normal Macbook. Thank you.

This solution do not work

Because it is not a solution. Can’t you see I’m the one asking and the one who came up with something for the printer to actually print? You should go ask hp support team. Which aren’t really helping to be honest. I’ve tried everything they suggested.

Worked for me! Thank you! 😁

I had the exact same issue as the OP, except on a MacBook Pro 2017.

HP Smart doesn't detect USB printers, and so I successfully used the Apple Support link @Eyrwa posted.

One note of warning though, which exists as of today (14 Sep 2021).

When you click on the link, it takes you to a page on Apple's web site. Then, you have to click a Download button, which takes you to a page on cdn-apple.com (an Apple content delivery web site). Using Safari, I then get an endlessly looping page telling me that the connection is not private, and even if you accept the risk, you can't proceed.

Using Edge, though, this wasn't a problem, and I was able to download and install the drivers, and in System Preferences my MacBook then successfully detected the correct drive for my printer (MFP M476dw).

So all's well that end's well, but just be aware that Safari might not want you to do this!

this worked for me too!

Thanks!
