I think that I have been scammed because 2 days ago I logged onto 123.hp.com to receive assistance with my new HP Deskjet printer and a chat box popped up.  And I was told that a technician would call me. And when the technician called me he asked me for a code that I gave him and he had access to my computer and he told me that my printer wasn't connecting because I had malware and viruses on my computer and that he could fix the problem for a price. I told him I would make partial payments and I watched as he moved the cursor around on my PC telling me that he was fixing my laptop. He said that HP would protect my PC for 3 years for 300 dollars or partial payments of 75 month.  I agreed to the partial payments and the full amount of 300 dollars was taken from my account and the technician told me that there was a glitch in their computer that caused it and so I called my bank and tried to stop the payment but I couldn't so I cancelled my bank card and I noticed when I received the payment confirmation that the name on it was... "Royal Technologies" and I had my email me a dispute form.  And when I received the form the technician called me back begging me not to file a dispute and that the money would be placed back into my account in a few days... so I am very pissed off and waiting for my money to be placed back into my account and I think that I am going to go ahead and file a dispute against them

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

I am sorry that happened to you.

I don't know where you landed -- yes, it was a scam.

Thieves are very sneaky.

Consider that having let the scoundrel into your computer allowed him access to anything and everything that is on the computer that is not protected.  This includes documents, pictures of your children, all your "stuff".

At the least, I'd change all passwords to any account on the computer and any other accounts that might be vulnerable.

HP does not scheme to get control of your computer.

HP does not sell you security software, claim your computer is full of bugs, or beg for any consideration.

Not.

I will send your concerns to our HP Community Moderator team.

Should there be a response, look for a message here before the agent uses any other method to contact you.

Beware of Fake "123" Sites

The "Real Deal"

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

https://123.hp.com/

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

  • There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.
  • If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to log into your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!
