Hi @avisn4u,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP desktop running Windows 11 is experiencing audio issues due to a problematic or outdated USB audio driver, specifically the Hewlett-Packard - USB - 6/1/2018 - 46.2.2631.1815 driver that refuses to update. Here's how to fix it:
1. Uninstall the Faulty Driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the USB Audio Device or the problematic entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Check and delete the driver software for this device if available.
- Restart your PC.
2. Install the Correct Driver Manually
Since Windows Update isn’t installing the correct version, download it directly from HP:
- Enter your desktop model.
- Select Windows 11 as your OS.
- Download the latest Audio or USB Audio driver listed.
3. Check Default Playback Device
Sometimes the issue is with the wrong output device being selected:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
- Select Sound settings.
- Under Output, make sure your speakers or headphones are selected as the default device.
4. Restart Windows Audio Services
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Right-click each and select Restart.
5. Use Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- Scroll down and click Troubleshoot under Advanced sound options.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
