printer won't print in colour

I got an HP update over the weekend.  Now my printer won't print anything in colour, even via Adobe or pdf files, where I can request colour.  All the previous questions and answers don't help me because when I go through to printer settings, all options are locked, unable to unlock, and there is no option even to choose greyscale/normal/colour. I have done all the rebooting, downloading software again, troubleshooting etc, no joy. I've tried control panel options too, all the same. I've tried file, print, advanced settings in Word. No option to pick black and white/colour there either. The printer will photocopy in colour, so it's not a problem there. My cartridges are full and HP cartridges. I think it's a software problem, but how do I resolve it?! HP just want me to pay for telephone advice. Virtual help no use at all.

Welcome to HP support community.

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

• In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
• Select your HP printer.
• Select Uninstall.
• In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
• In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
• Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
• Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
• Click on Drivers tab.
• Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
• Select OK.
• Remove all instances of the same.
• Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
• Close Devices and Printers. 
• Restart the PC again.

Update the printer firmware

Follow the steps mentioned in this HP document to update firmware:- Click here

Once you install the printer, change the bellow settings to print in color.

1. Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button , and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
2. Right-click the printer that you want to use, and then click Printing preferences.
3. Make your choices, and then click OK.
4. Under option Print color select color , then the OK button.
