I have the same exact "checking registration status" problem. I have an HP Officejet Pro 8620 and all seems to be working fine, even the HP Smart software on my Dell XPS 8940 Windows 10 desktop PC says the printer is "ok" and up to date on updates.
But when I press the printer's leftmost button on touchpad to check connectivity and registration status, it just hangs for a few minutes displaying "checking registration status"
It then just returns to main printer menu and displays a yellow exclamation point on the same icon I pressed.
My printer is connected via CAT7 Ethernet cable (I tried 3 cables so issue is not due to bad cable) to my Nighthawk AX6000 wifi router. I do this so that 3-4 laptops around my home (besides my hard-connected desktop PC) can print wirelessly via WIFI to this same HP OfficeJet Pro 8640 printer.
What's the problem?
Thanks

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand that your printer shows "checking registration status" error, follow these steps to fix this issue.
Perform a power reset
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet and printer without any surge protector.
- Turn on the printer.
Update the printer firmware
Here are the steps:- Click here
Let me know how it goes.
