Hi @Bonnie1357,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Printer Failure" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600, with the message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If the problem persists, contact HP," can be quite frustrating. Here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to try to resolve this issue:

1. Restart the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

2. Check Ink Cartridges and Printhead

  • Open the printer and carefully remove the ink cartridges.
  • Inspect the ink cartridges for any damage or leaks.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and ensure they are properly seated.

3. Clean the Printhead

  • Access the printhead through the printer’s maintenance menu (if available) or manually if necessary.
  • Remove the printhead and gently clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Ensure the printhead is dry before reinstalling it.

4. Perform a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  • Use the printer’s menu to perform a printhead cleaning cycle. This can often resolve issues related to clogged nozzles or ink delivery problems.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for any available firmware updates for your HP Officejet Pro 8600. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest firmware. Follow the instructions to update your printer’s firmware.

6. Reset the Printer

  • Perform a partial reset of the printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    • Press and hold the "#" and "3" buttons on the printer.
    • While holding these buttons, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
    • Release the buttons once the printer starts up.

7. Check for Obstructions

  • Ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions inside the printer. Sometimes, small bits of paper or debris can cause errors.

8. Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Ensure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause compatibility issues and errors.

9. Service or Replace the Printer

  • If the printer is out of warranty and the cost of repair is high, you might consider replacing the printer.we can guide you through your options, including trade-in or recycling programs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
