HP office jet 6500 E709
macOS 10.12 Sierra

I have a HP Officejet 6500 E709. When copying or scanning using the feeder or the flatbed I get a 1/2 inch solid black line from the top to bottom.  The line is directly over the track that the scanning unit rolls on.  I have cleaned the glass several times and rebooted the unit.

Hi @sullipl,

Thanks for stopping by the HP forums. Good day! 🙂 I read the post about the printer having issues while copying or scanning.  It will be a delight to assist you here. 🙂

Superb effort, splendid troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting.  Kudos to you on that score. 🙂  You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did you perform a hard reset?
  • Have you bypassed power strips?
  • Did you repalce cartrdiges and check by copying again?

For starters please try with different cartridges to copy again. If the issue persists please follow all the steps from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-6500-All-in-One-Printer-series---E7/3795309/model/3... If this does not do the trick for you, please contact HP phone support to get the unit serviced.

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

Hope this helps.   I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll always be there to assist you always. 🙂

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Thanks for the response. Here are my responses:

  • Did you perform a hard reset?  YES
  • Have you bypassed power strips?  YES
  • Did you repalce cartrdiges and check by copying again? YES

None helped.  The printer was 7 years old and would not be bought back using HP buy back program so I donated it to Boys/girls club and bought a new Epson XP-830.

Again thanks for the help you can close my inquiry

Hi @sullipl,

I reviewed the post. I thank you for your super quick reply.   I thank you greatly for your response.

However, as you say the issue occurs while making copies from the printer,  It certainly looks like a hardware issue with the printer.
