HP Color Laser MFP 178nw

My 178nw will not connect to my wifi.

Previously I had it hardwired by ethernet cable, but I've changed ISP & I've moved the router.

The wifi light flashes. & I can connect to it via Wi-Fi direct.

I go to (Menu) > Network > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi Settings and the Wizard isn't listed. I have:

Wi-fi > Wi-Fi on/off; WPS;Wi-Fi Direct; Wi-Fi Signal;Wi-Fi Default

Wi-fi is selected as on

WPS is PBC

Wi-Fi Direct is on

Under wi-fi signal it says 'Disconnected'

I've click wi-fi default

The printer doesn't display when I run HP App set-up either

Any help on how to connect to the home wi-fi is appreciated.

Scott

@SJ68, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I see that you are trying to connect the printer to the wireless network. As this model printer does not have a touch screen, the wireless setup wizard option is not available.

Wifi-Direct is used if you do not have access to a wireless router. When you connect the computer to the printer's Wifi-Direct network, there will be no internet access on the computer. The default password is 12345678

To connect the printer to your wireless network, refer to - Connecting an HP Printer Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)

  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.

You may also refer to - HP printer setup (Wi-Fi network)

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately my router doesn’t have a WPS option.  Modern routers have removed this as it has known vulnerabilities.

any other ideas…?

best wishes,

@SJ68

Kindly use the HP Smart app - HP printer setup (Wi-Fi network)

Or, use a USB cable and then convert it to wireless - Changing from a USB to a Wireless Connection

Let me know how it goes.

Your proposed solutions seem completely ignorant of reality.

1) macOS doesn't support WiFi Direct

2) You can't download a driver with the HP utility for macOS if you search for the printer on hp.com

3) HP Smart doesn't find the print

4) WPS is buggy. I managed once to connect with it and it randomly forgot the pairing. No it's back to not working.

This printer seems to simply not work

@Thepian

1) macOS does support Wifi-Direct.

2) What model printer are you using? Which version of macOS are you using?

3) Check the connectivity between the printer and the Mac.

4) WPS works if you have access to a wireless router.

If you have a wireless router, you do not have to use Wifi-Direct. Kindly elaborate on the issue for better assistance.

Keep me posted for further assistance.
