Hello, I purchased a LaserJet 400 M401n with the optional 500 sheet tray ("tray 3"). I have placed the printer on the tray and filled it with paper. The internal "tray 2" has no paper in it. When paper is in tray 2, it prints fine. When paper is in tray 3 only, I get a "load paper" message. The printer does not appear to be recognizing tray 3. Does anyone know how to get this to work? Thank you.

Thank you, DoublHH. I do not see any options for tray 3, only 1 and 2.
My expectation is that it would show up under Paper Settings next to the settings for Tray 1 and Tray 2, but it is not shown there.

After reviewing another post, changing the driver's properties for Tray 3 from "Not Available" and "Not Installed" to "Letter" and "Installed" did not solve the problem. On the printer's LCD display, it says "Load paper."

When you print a configuration report does it show tray 3 installed?
1. From the Home screen on the product control panel, touch the Setup button.
2. Touch the Reports menu.
3. Touch the Configuration Report button to print the report.

I printed out something called "HP LaserJet 400 M401n Configuration Report", and the only mention I can find of "Tray 3" is under the "paper settings" rubric. It list all 3 trays as able to take any type or size of paper. Am I naïve in assuming this means that the machine recognizes that Tray 3 is actually installed?

If the configuration page shows Tray 3 then yes, it recognizes the tray. Now when there is no paper in tray 2 and you try and print, does it only say "Load Paper" or does it say "Load Paper with Letter Plain" or something to that effect?
Tray 1 default is any size and type. Tray 2 default should say plain letter...
