I have just replaced my black ink and the printer will not now COPY or PRINT a letter. It WILL however, print out a full sheet for a PRINT QUALITY DIAGNOSTIC. This shows all colours correctly, all alignement ok, the black column empty (outlined in MY new ink!) and all wording fine, again in black.

This shows it doesnt need cleaning, or realigning or anything to do with a printhead. It manages to find the black ok for this so why does it not work?

Please help before I go and buy a new CANON printer.

The diagnostic test page uses a mixture of black and color ink to print the page, so that the information is visible even if black or one or more colors are not printing properly.  YOu can get a similar effect by selecting Photo paper as the media type, this will force the color ink to be used instead of black.

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing in your Photosmart 5520 printer.
