I too had the same problem.  All of a sudden the scanner stopped working.  I tried about 6 times to uninstall and reinstall, no success.  I tried a few of the solutions that I found in the forums.

I was contemplating being a new 8600 but got to thinking.  If HP doesn't seem to want to fix the problem with interfacing with win 7, then what might happen with the 8600 when I might decide to upgrade to win 8?

I found a cure tfor the problem.  I bought an all in one from another manufacture and it works just great under win 7.

Good bye HP

I have exact same error code and exact same problem. And looks like there no solution is offered by HP yet.

Can someone from HP jump on this and finally solve this for many people that are having this problem with THEIR product?

Exactly the same problem here in Windows 8, with a HP Officejet 6500 E709e series printer/scanner (using USB).

It is now May 2013 and there still doesnt seem to be a solution from HP

I recently bought a new laptop running windows 8 and my HP Officejet 6500 won't scan.

Sorry for the delayed response.  I ran across your thread regarding the numeric error message you are receiving and it sounds like it is a scan destination error or a T-grip error which means it cannot communicate based on the numbers in the title.  The two latest posts on here involve Windows 8.  If anyone would like instructions for the following techniques for Windows 7, just let me know as I am happy to help.

I am writing this in regards to the Officejet 6500 but please answer a few questions for me. The OJ 6500 has a whole series of printers under this number, please verify for me both the connection type (USB, wireless, or Ethernet) and the model number in case you have any questions about the next steps, that way I can better assist you.

I do not know what exactly causes this but my assumption is an update of some sort (usually anti-virus) that rewrites registry files so this can get rather difficult to resolve, hence why you haven't seen too many responses to this.

The reason a full scrub is necessary is to try to remove the damaged registry files.  I know the first person to post on here didn't have success with his steps, so I want to provide some that are a little different.

Windows 8 - Full Scrub

Follow the steps below and please let me know what happens.  I really hope this helps!

Step one: Clear temp directory

1.  On the Apps desktop right click the mouse, and select all apps. Type %temp% in the run app.  If you see any personal files in here you do not want to lose, save them somewhere else before completing this step.

2. Highlight all the files in this folder, and then press the delete key to delete. If you get a message that the file is in use you will need to skip this file(s).   * Continue with Step 2 below.

Step two: Downloaded and extracted to your system:

1. Download the full feature software and drivers at www.hp.com/support by selecting the Software tab and entering in your product name/model number and select the Windows 8 version.

2. Once the download is finished double click on the file to extract the software.

3. When the installation window opens press the cancel button to stop the installation.

4. On the Apps desktop right click the mouse and select all apps. Type %temp% in the run app.

5. Look for and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356).

6. Right click on the folder and select Copy.

7. Close that window, and all your open windows, and then in the middle of the desktop right click your mouse, and select Paste. This will move the 7z folder to your desktop.

8. Open the 7z folder you just copied to your desktop.

9. Open Util folder.

10. Open CCC folder.

11. Run the uninstall_L4 (L4 IS ONLY FOR NON-HP COMPUTERS - run an L3 uninstall if you own an HP computer).

12. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer.

13. Run Disk cleanup by holding down the Windows button and R at the same time to pull up the Run prompt and type cleanmgr.exe and press enter.  Select all the boxes and delete everything.  Click on the link for Microsoft support regarding this tool and any disclaimers.

14.  Before installing the printer, try scanning using Microsoft Fax and Scan by simply typing those words while on the apps screen. I am very curious to know if the scanner is functioning at all.

15. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player.

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

 16. Open the 7z folder and then double click on the Setup.exe file which will be toward the bottom of the open window. Follow the on screen instructions to reinstall your printer.

Let me know if you are able to successfully install the software and scan with it or if you have any questions regarding the step above.  🙂

Got the same issue and not it's not isolated to my computer.  We all just got HP 64 bit Windows 7 computers and get the same error when I try to install Officejet Pro L7680.  In addition, whenever I restart the computer, the printer would disappear by itself.

Yes, I have downloaded ALL the latest version of driver, software, patches, etc.

Yes, I have done the FULL Scrub several times already.

HP use to make quality machine and easy software, but now the support is deceptively poor.

That is interesting information (how the printer would just disappear).  I want to make sure I understand the problem you're having spdracer888: regardless of which computer you install it on (all Windows 7), you see this error code (8, [(1,0, -2147221164)]) and the printer will disappear out of your Devices and Printers folder when you reboot the PC?

This may be good news in regards to your Officejet Pro L7680.  I have seen this before and there is a software update patch.  This may be applicable to all the users with a Windows 7 PC experiecing this error, "Windows 7 64-bit Only - The Printer is Not Working and is Not in the Devices and Printers Folder."  Click on the link, download, and follow the on-screen instructions and let me know how it goes!  I really hope this helps you.

I have another test I would like for you to try and let me know if this helps all of you.  pcwizard has been having success with installation errors by creating a new User Account within Windows.  Click this link to see how the issue was resolved using his method.  I will post the steps below:

"Windows 7 and Windows Vista allows you to have multiple users sharing the same computer under their own individual accounts. This allows each individual user to have their own location on the computer where they can store their personal documents, pictures, videos, saved games, and other personal data. This also allows the owner of the computer to assign certain accounts the ability to perform administrative tasks like installing software, while limiting other user's abilities.

This tutorial will walk you through creating a new account in Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

  1. Click on the Start button. This is the small round button () in the lower left corner of your screen that has a Windows flag on it.

  2. Click on the Control Panel menu option.

  3. When the control panel opens you will see a screen similar to Figure 1 below.

figure 1.png
Figure 1. Windows 7 Control Panel

  1. Click on the Add or remove user accounts control panel option as shown by the red arrow in figure 1.

  2. You will now be in the Manage Accounts control panel as shown in Figure 2 below.

figure 2.png

This screen shows all the accounts currently on your computer. To create a new account, click on the Create a new account option as shown by the red arrow above.

  1. You will now be at the Create New Account screen.

figure 3.png
Figure 3. Create New Account screen

In the New account name field enter the name of the new account that you would like to create. This could be a person's first name, full name, or whatever other designation you would like to give. You then need to decide which of the two types of accounts you would like to create. An Administrator account has full access to the computer and can make all changes, install software, and create and delete accounts. The other type of account is Standard user and has limited privileges as to what settings and changes it can make to the computer. It is suggested that for all users, you set them as a Standard User account and have one administrator account that you can logon to as needed. This will protect your computer from malware and other harmful activities.

When you have finished selecting a name and the type of account you wish to setup, you should click on the Create Accountbutton.

  1. Your new account will have been created and you will see it listed in the Manage Accounts screen.

figure 4.png
Figure 4. New user has been created

As you can see our new user, named Test Account, has been created.

Now when you start Windows 7 or Vista, you will see the additional account listed in the logon screen. That user can then select their login name and login into their profile so they can access their private data.

Install the printer on the newly created user account, and let me know if you experience the same issues?"

Ok Visionary, I did everything you suggested and the outcome was exactly the same error message.  Before installing the HP full feature software I could not scan as the scanner was not detected.

Now that I have installed the Full Feature software I can scan using Microsoft Fax and Scan and also through the web server but HP Solutions still reports scanner not present with the same error message identifier.

Wasted a Saturday afternoon doing it too!

Very very frustrating!!!!

I understand, trust me I do.  Those were extensive steps and I will not put you through that again since according to some of the first posts, scrub techniques do not help doing it multiple times contrary to other Solution Center errors.  I am glad to hear the work-around will provide you some scanner functionality though.  I will forward this up so that I can discuss the next steps for you.  You have put the hardest stuff behind you, short of re-installing the operating system of the PC you are on.  I do want to confirm with you any questions I will be asked as well:

@markofcain - all are welcome to reply:

1.  Did you follow the full scrub techniques to completely uninstall the printer from your computer as suggested in Message 15?

      a) anything you had a particularly hard time with?

      b) Which model of Officejet 6500 do you have (6500 E709a, 6500 Wireless E709n, 6500A E710a, or 6500A Plus E710n)?

@--All-- who have replied thus far:

2.  Did you create a new user account before or after you already installed the printer's software back on the computer?  This step may only be effective if you remove the printer first then install the software on the new user account.

3.  What anti-virus software are you using?  This may or may not play a role in it but it will help me understand your computer better.

4.  How is the printer connected (USB, wireless, or Ethernet)?  It appears to affect printers using Solution Center and both USB and network-connected printers.

5.  Any other error messages?  TWAIN seems to be playing a role in all of this which is HP scanning software.

6.  What does the Print and Scan Dr. say when you run it?  WIA is the computer's scanning software (Windows Fax and Scan/Paint) for example.

7.  What is the model of printer you have - just for confirmation to all that reply?  So far this thread seems to only discuss the Officejet 6500 and the Officejet Pro L7680.

8. Do you also have problems with this printer disappearing from the Devices and Printers folder?

Sorry for the time spent and the trouble this has caused.  It is truly a rare instance and I will not require you to repeat any steps.  Just know if this is a network-connected printer, it could be router ports if this effects multiple computers.  If this is USB-connected, it could be within the Device Manager or possibly a conflict with existing software.  Troubleshooting HP Solution Center doesn't get much easier but I will do my best!  I will need to know the answers to those questions before I can present this properly. I'm happy to help though!
