932/933 inkjet cartridges in HP OfficeJet Pro 8600

I have owned my 8600 for approximately 2 years. I have been running HP 932/933 cartidges. The vendor has a record of my purchases. When the Black 932 xl cartridge ran dry, I went and got another. It installed successfully, but then the printer complained about the existing 933 Yellow, so I went and got another as well. When I tried to install this, the printer would not recognize the Yellow cartridge as valid. Telephone support insisted that the only valid cartridges were 950/951, this despite the fact that the printer is quite happy with its existing Cyan and Magenta 933 cartridges. All of these cartidges are original HP parts bought from reputable retail chains. Please advise. I do remember there was a recent software upgrade installed on this printer.

The 932/933 cartridges are used in the Officejet 6600, not the 8600.  While the Officejet 6600 and Officejet Pro 8600 look similar in pictures they are different printers entirely.  You can check the model number as shown in the document here.

If your printer is an Officejet 6600 the document here may help resolve the cartrdige error.

Thanks for responding. I realize that most issues like this are user error, but in this case any solution to my probelm is going to have to take into account that in my OfficeJet Pro 8600, the following cartridges are quite happly coexisting:

• Cyan 933
• Magenta 933
• Yellow 951xl
• Black

Well, I must say I am surprised.  I have had an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus for years, it always used the 950 and 951 cartridges as recommended in the HP SureSupply site.  The Officejet Pro 8600 and 8600 Premium use the same 950 and 951 series cartridges.

All I can say is there is no indication anywhere I have found that would indicate HP 933 cartrdiges would work in the Officejet Pro 8600 series printers.  Even if they did it seems it would be a poor value to use the 933 cartrdiges; the 933 cartridges are about the same price as the 951, but the 951 have about twice the ink.

Now, I suspect there is a hardware problem with the printer. Now the printer does not recognize the newly installed 951xl Yellow cartridge. This problem began on Monday of this week, when I replaced both the Black and Yellow 932/931 cartridges with 950/951 ones. Have not really used the printer much after that until today. Now, after the printer began rejecting the Cyan/Magenta 933 cartridges - would print one or two pages and then complain, first about one colour and then, after changing that cartridge, print another couple of pages, change the other cartridge - the printer is now rejecting the new Yellow 951xl cartridge.

We use a HP 8610 in the office after the old 6300 broke down. Since we had a lot of 932XL cartridges left from the old machine we just continued using them in the new 8610 without any problems, the HP8610 just accepted them without any error messages. More or less a year has passed since we started using the new printer and now suddenly it doesn't want to accept the last few 932 cartridges. Our think printer has automatic updates and I believe this caused the problem, we will turn these of and reset factory settings. I'll report back with the result...
