I am trying to put my printer on a network at work so that people anywhere on the network can send print jobs to it.

We do not use DHCP, and I have been given a static IP for the printer to have on the network.

My problem is that I cannot figure out how to connect to the printer to assign it this IP.  The instructions for doing this all begin "type your printer's IP address into a web browser", but my problem is that my printer does not have one yet!

Printing the configuration page shows that the printer's IPv4 address is still "0.0.0.0", but it does have a IPv6 address, so I know that the jack is live and that the printer can see the network.

Is there a way for me to configure the printer via the USB cable?

Thanks.

page 28 of the P1606 User Guide contains some networking information that might come in handy.

If you want to configure the network settings manually without having to set the printer up via USB, you could try plugging the printer into the network port, allow it to aquire any network info and the IP address automatically. Then use that IP to browse to the web interface and there change your IP settings to manual with the IP address you want.

Hello @astrowright

IPV6 currently it's not working worldwide

IPV4 should currently have an IP address and not 0.0.0.0

You want to use a different network cable, different network port make sure that on the back of the printer on the actual network port you have the green and amber light

If after doing this you still have a 0.0.0.0 address then you want to do the following

turn off the modem and router if you have and printer and disconnect the network cord

Turn on first the modem wait until it has all the normal lights  then if you have a router do the same turn on and wait for the lights to show and finally turn on the printer and wait for normal lights to flash at that point you want to print another configuration to get the IP address

once you have an IP address you can enter the address into a web broweser url and go to network tab you will be able to move from dhcp to manual ip address

Thanks for the ideas.

I have used this cable and jack successfully with my laptop, so I know it's live and working.  But the printer doesn't get an IP when I plug it in.

You write "turn off the modem and router," but I'm not at home.  This is an office environment, and the jack is installed in the wall.  As I wrote, it seems to be functioning properly.

Is there a way to "talk to" the printer via the USB cable?  Or am I stuck unless it assigns itself an IP?

You write "without having to set the printer up via USB"— actually, since the printer refuses to give itself an IP, that would be a great option!  I don't see anything about how to do that in the manual, though—is that really a thing?
