C5250 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)

Using either the original install disc (which used to install correctly) or the latest driver download from HP, at the end of install displays "Fatal Error" message.  Error Situatio Code: 20674369  Driver Date & Version: 2/14/2008, 100.000.235.001   Have gone through all the steps in the downloaded error correction document to no avail.  When clicking on the HP Solutions icon it displays message "Device not found" even though during install it showed transferring data for about 15 minutes before end of install.  Printer was working fine for last 2 years but when I needed to scan a document the HP Solutions icon was missing from the desktop so I un-installed and when re-installing the problem began.

Hello ,

HP Printers - 'Fatal Error' Displays During HP Software Installation (Windows)

This document is for HP printers released in 2009 and earlier and computers with Windows.
This document provides instructions for recovering from a 'Fatal Error' message when installing the HP printer software in Windows. Some 'Fatal Error' messages are also known as 'MSI' errors and usually include a four-digit numbered code, although the exact text of the error message varies.

Refer to one of the following sections that best matches the error displayed on your computer.

The Fatal Error message does not include any fault codes, only "Fatal Error during installation."  Any suggestions on how to completely remove all traces of all installations from the computer so that I can try a "clean" install like the first time that it was installed?

Hi,

Unregister and reregister the Windows Installer Service to make sure the Windows Installer files are not missing or damaged.
  1. Search Windows for run, and then select run from the list of results.
    The Run dialog box opens.
  2. In the Open box, type msiexec /unreg, and then click OK.
  3. Open the Run dialog box again.
  4. In the Open box, type msiexec /regserver, and then click OK

Step 2 : Perform a level 3 uninstall

A level 3 uninstall is a more comprehensive uninstall than performed in previous steps.
Make sure to save and close any files before performing these steps.

  1. Search Windows for util, and then select the util folder from the list of results.
The folder opens in Windows Explorer or File Explorer.
  2. Make sure the folder is for the printer you are trying to install. In the address bar, you should see your printer model and software version, such as OJ6500vE709_Full_14.
  3. Double-click the ccc folder.
  4. Double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file.
The utility uninstalls the software and prompts you to restart the computer.

Download the latest HP software from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, however, I ran into a problem on step 2.  In the search for "util" only the folders Utility and Utility64 were found containing the files "ccc.utility.msi" and "ccc.utility64.msi" respectively.  I also searched for "Uninstall.L3.bat" but nothing was found.

The last install that I tried was from the original install disc, but I got a pop-up window titled "HPProductAssistant" which contained the message, "The feature you are trying to use in on a CD-ROM or other removable disc that is not available.  Insert the 'HPProductAssistant' disc and click OK."   I searched the files on the installation disc and found the "HPProductAssistant.msi" file, clicked on it so that it showed in the Browse window, then clicked OK but it just returned a short time later repeating the same request.  Had to click on Cancel multiple times to stop the loop then CtrlAltDel to start task manager to halt the hpinstall.exe process.

Things just keep getting better, don't they?
