HP ENVY 5640 e
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I copy or scan by putting paper flat on screen I get a thick black line down one side of the copy / scan. This has only just started happening. I have cleaned the screen as recommended so I don't think it is a mark or dirt. It is about 2cm in diameter and goes the whole length of the copy. Any other suggestions?

Here is an example below

Welcome to the HP Forums!
I hope you're well @PaulG6,

I saw your post about the black line you're seeing on your copies and scans. Kudos to you for cleaning the scanner glass, as the cause is usually dirt or debris. However, it must be something else in your case.

I would suggest a power reset, and ensure the printer is plugged in directly to a wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. Also try a firmware update. Here are some instructions to help out.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the unit.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the unit.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

If the issue continues, please call phone support to see about a replacement unit.

Hit the "Accept as Solution" if we've reached a solution, and the "thumbs up" to say thanks for my help. 🙂

Have a great day:D
