hp photosmart 7525
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

This issue has been plaguing me ever since I purchased this printer.

I never print photos. Not a one.  However the black photo cartridge constantly is empty while the 564xl black cartridge is full.  When the photo cartridge is empty I can no longer print documents.  Is their a way to prioritze in settings so that the ink is first used from the 564xl cartridge?

Thank you

Hello, @cevai - Hope you are well 🙂

Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a great location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

I understand that the Photosmart 7525 printer is using the photo black ink instead of the regular black ink cartridge. The printer requires all cartridges to have ink - they do not need to be full but they all need to be installed and have adequate ink. The large black cartridge is pigmented black, primarily used for text and some graphics on plain paper. The bow tie thinner cartridge is the photo cartridge. It contains dye-based black ink and is designed for printing on photo paper. The pigmented black ink is not compatible with glossy photo media, the photo black will be used in cases where photo paper is selected in the driver or detected automatically.

I would suggest you use Black Ink Only and it will use the "fatter" black ink cartridge otherwise it will mix all colors to produce B&W, specially the "narrower" black cartridge or photo black. Try the steps below:

Go to Control panel - Devices and printers.

Right-click on Photosmart 7525 and select "Printing preferences".

Now select Advanced button at the bottom right of the screen.

The next page that opens will allow you to set the printer to use Black Ink Only when printing from the PC (please follow the screen shot below for any clarification).

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂
