I have indeed, now found the answer. I have binned the printer and bought another make that whilst, as a printer, is not 100%, at least the envelopes are not getting ink all over them!!

Cheers.

It's unfortunate that the only alternative for this fix is to purchase another brand.

I really believe that this problem can be remedied but no one at HP Tech Services or QA seems to be taking notice or are ignoring this problem.

I really believe it has something to do with excess ink being deposited in such a way that the pinch roller is coming in contact with the ink and transferred to the envelope.  Thickness may have something to do with it since it is not deposting on paper...or it could be something to do with the command to print an envelope and the printer is somehow accessing a different path to print and envelope.

I had hoped that someone at HP would have taken on this issue and attempted to resolve rather than lose a customer (you).

Good Luck!

This is a great fix! Thank you so much. I've been dealing with ink-smudged envelopes for months, and have dealt with it by letting the ink dry and then covering it with white-out, not a very good solution. But taping down the leading edge of the envelope-flap works perfectly. I had a volume job of 50 envelopes to print, and all came out clean. I'm delighted. Thanks again. I have an HP C410a.

O.K. I just taped down the corner (flap) of a #10 envelope and ran thru printer.  The ink still deposited approx. an 1/8" from the lead edge (the ink deposit is minute and intermittent).  The ink marks looked as though the roller deposited the ink.

I removed the tape and at least where the tape was position, the ink was deposited on the tape and upon removal...no ink on envelope!

While this is a fix for a deficiency with the printer / ink / roller /...it does not really address the problem of why this is happening.

I will just run my envelopes thru without the tape unless it's correspondence that may need a pristine envelope I will tape the entire leading edge of the envelope.

Note: There is a tape that is available that is similar to the adhesive like 3M's Post 'em made by Scoth brand tape that will not tear or delaminate the envelope.

I wish that HP will simple remedy this problem.

The saga continues!

Are you kidding me?

tape every envelope before printing it?

What if you have a mass mailing?

HP Recommended

I think it would be much better if someone could share how to clean the printer so this does not occur.

Are you going to do a mass mailing using Microsoft word and tape every envelope?

Are thes printers not designed for Business applications?

You were delighted to have to tape 50 envelopes?  Why should you have to do that?

I would be delighted if ANYONE from HP would acknowledge there is a problem!!

This is NOT a solution.  It does the same thing with an Office Depot standard gummed flap.

The printer obviously needs some area cleaned, maybe you can find the answer on Youtube,

HP apparently does not care!  Why I ended up buying an Epson!

Per initial posting, this problem was reported as Solved.

I do not believe having a HP Customer purchase an Epson printer as an acceptable Solution to the problem intially reported.

We have been awaiting a reponse from Technical Support to provide resolution to issue of having ink deposits along lead edge of envelope when printing envelopes.

This is still a problem.  Work around has been taping edge with Scotch tape (there is a type that is non-agressive. i.e. Post 'em like) that will not delaminate envelope surface.  You can then run thru printer and then peel off tape with ink deposit.

However, this is not a fix just a work around.

Anyone printing envelopes in mass quanity may find this work around unacceptable and resort to picking up an competitive (i.e. Espon) printer...SAD.

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model?
