Hi @pierce3215

Thank you for your feedback.

Can you share with us the steps and the screenshot which show the "borderless" photo print settings?

Thanks.

I purchased the HP Officejet 8740 printer in late May 2016. In early June I discovered that the printer/driver would not support the printing of borderless photos. After spending a lot of time exploring all available settings, I decided to get help from HP Support and ended up in a chat session for ~1.5 hours. Reluctantly I let the support tech have access to my Dell XPS8500 desktop. The tech worked for more than an hour trying to find a way to print borderless prints including reloading the full feature driver software. After more than an hour I communicated via the chat session that he was not making any progress and I would like to end the session. He continued another software install that was able to get the borderless print function working. The session ended and I was able to do the borderless printing that I needed to do. Sometime later I discovered that some supported 8740 features would not work (e.g. automatic double side printing). After some investigating, I discovered that the support tech had installed driver software for the HP Deskjet 6980 in order to get the borderless printing to work (the 6980 is a low cost photo printer)!

Based on my experience, I don’t plan to call HP tech support again because I will get another tech who does not really understand the 8740. Someone on the design team for this printer needs to fix this problem. Fortunately I purchased the 8740 from a store that will let me return the printer for full credit. I will probably go back to a multifunction Canon which is an excellent printer that has a short life (<3 years, based on my experience).

Hi @sos2HP

Thanks for using the HP Forum.

The HP Officjet Pro 8740 is able to print borderless photo for a Letter or A4 size.

Example of the setting is shown:

However, it only supports Edge to Edge A4 or Letter.  For 4x6 (common size) photos, we can install and use a HP Officejet Pro 8720 driver.

This relevant resource will show you how :

Hope that helps.

I am very frustrated with this NEW HP Officejet Pro 8740 (just installed on 11/7/16). It does not have all the options that my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Professional had. I am very disappointed that it does NOT offer borderless printing or DRAFT quality printing which I used for most everyday printing to save on ink. You also can't a different type of paper on top of another type of paper in a paper tray. If I just want to print one thing on card stock or any special paper I have to take ALL the regular paper out of the tray before I can print - ridiculous!!!!!

I read from an HP employee comment that you can install HP Officejet Pro 8720 driver which offers the borderless printing. I tried to do this following his complete instructions but there was NO HP 8720 listed in my printer choices, even after doing a windows update of printers.

This printer is not user friendly and does not offer all the great features of my  prior HP printers (but this is suppose to be the UPGRADE of what I had)!

I have always owned HP printers - after this terrible experience, I think I will return this printer and go with a different brand.

Hi @wishes2,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

"Draft" mode is equivalent to "General Office".  This is the term used for PDL printers.

Not sure why you are not able to get the Officejet Pro 8620 in-OS drivers, it's in-OS and will always be there,  May want to check your WIndows updates (or try another PC?)

Also, for correct usage of the trays, we found the following resource to be useful.

HP Officejet Pro 8730/8740 : Setup and use a "Copy" Default Tray

HP OJP 8740 (Installing and using the 2nd Tray)

Hope that helps!

I tried to install the driver according to your instructions but there is no HP Officejet Pro 8720 listed in my choices for drivers. I have updated several times and numerous choices for drivers are there but not the 8720.

HI @wishes2

What Operating System are you using?

Have you tried to do a "Windows Update" from your "Add Printer" Screen?

Add a printer 4a.jpg

Do let us know if you are able to find the Officejet Pro 8720 printer after doing the WIndows Update.  (it might take a while to update)

Hope that helps!

I have Windows 7 Professional; system is 32-bit.

I have run the "windows update" from the add printer screen at least 10 times now. MANY HP printers show up but NOT the 8720.

I appreciate your trying to help but I'm not sure this is all worth it. I really think I'm better off returning the printer and buying a different one.

Hi @wishes2

Thanks for your patience.

Found a way to install the HP Officjet Pro 8720 drivers on your Win 7 system (using the "Add printer" method).

If you are still  holding on to the printer, we are happy to share the steps if you are interested.

However, if you want to return the printer, we'd recommend the HP Officjet Pro 8720.  It should have the features of the older 8600 series - including borderless photo printing etc.

Have a nice day!
