Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that Tray 1 of your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw is not working.
This issue could occur if there is any obstruction in the paper path or the sensors may be defective.
Let's go through a few steps to resolve this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: http://hp.care/2hFzr1t
You may also update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update Utility
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I checked as thoroughly as I could the paper path and found no issues. I was directed to check the sensor. However, I am not sure where to locate the sensor. Another observation I have made since the original post is that the bypass sheet feeder will accept an envelope, but not a sheet of paper. I don't know if that changes anything. I wonder why it would accept an envelope and not a sheet of paper. Is the same sensor used for both the envelope and the sheet of paper?

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.
This issue could occur if the paper is not inserted properly or the paper guides may not be set properly.
Please follow page no. 16 of the user manual to load paper in the link: http://hp.care/2gZ7QrN
