Product: Officejet Pro 8500A Plus
Operating System: macOS 10.12 Sierra

Hi there

I have just inherited this relatively new printer/scanner to use primarily for scanning, however, having trouble getting started despite following all of the steps in the manual.  The ink cartridge is empty, and although I'm not printing, do I need to replace the ink cartridge to make the thing work??

Yeah pretty much.   Then main job is printing.  So it must pass all test to print even to scan.  Sorry.
