Hello -
I am trying to install a LJ 2420d Network printer on a Dell GX520 Win 7 PC on the local network, but it won"t load the Daggone driver.
Local Setup:
1. Dell GX280 running Win XP SP3 has the LJ 2420d printer attached to the LPT1 port. (more on this later).
A. X280 connected to the local Intranet via hardwire and switch. Communiations between the 280 and 520 works
fine.
B. The 2420d ptr has been shared.
2. Dell GX520 actions:
A. First off, the Ptr Add routine couldn't find the 2420 driver on Windows Update so had to dnld the HP Universal
Print Driver v6.3.0.21178 from HO website (latest version).
B. Added the new printer (2420d) as a local ptr and inst'd the driver - no problem. Connect 2420d to GX520 LPt1
port, prints fine.
C. Now try to add a Network printer entry for the 280 hosted ptr.
1. Do 'Add a Ptr' and select 'Network'. I see the target ptr \\EGM1\Laserj.2420 PCL 6 highlighted, along with 3 other
shared printers on the GX280.
2. Click Next, Windows Update search starts, then times out - no driver found. Click OK.
3. Next screen allows local search, and has the exact same target directory as was used to install the local printer -
C:\HP Universal Print Driver\pcl6-x64-6.3.0.21178.
4. If I click Browse, the above directory show 12-13 'inf' files. When I click OK, I immediately get a box saying it
couldn't find a driver - and that window is overlaying a now running the Windows Update search popup!
Now, for more on the 'more on this later' comment above.
GX280 -
I looked at the shared printers currently installed on the GX280 and checked the 'Port' setting for them. Although the 2420 is physically connected to the LPT1 port on the GX280, the port info in properties for that printer says it is using Port DOT4-002. The LPt1 port on this PC is showing as used by the printer 'Engagement CS' and further identified as a driver for the program 'Creative Solutions', which is an Accounting program.
GX520 -
When I look at the Ports being used in the GX520, i see ...
PORT DESCRIPTION PRINTER
LPT1 Printer Port HP LaserJet 2420d PCL 6 (which is exactly what I named the local printer)
DOT4-001 HP LaserJet 2420 Printer Blank
What is the problem?
