Having this same problem. Set a static IP address. Did surgery on the router. Entered the MAC number for the printer.
Result? Spinning wheel.
Tried to access the scanner. Crashed the computer (spinning wheel, unresponsive to mouse clicks).
Moved to a Win7 machine.
Same thing.
This printer is like Satan on our system. It is taking down machine after machine, and it steadfastly refuses to print.
A printer that doesn't print. A scanner that doesn't scan.

Hi FrustratedI
Can you ping the printer on the Mac. Go to the apple, system preferences, network,
click ping across the top, type in printers IP address click ping.
Do you get any replies back?
Try and ping the printer on Windows. Go to start, type in run, enter, type cmd,
type ping IP address of printer.
Do you get any replys back?
Find out what the computers IP is.
Start, type in run, enter, type cmd, type ipconfig.
Check the computers ip address.
The first 3 sets of numbers should match the first 3 sets of numbers on the printers IP
address to be on the same network.
On the Mac try and ping the Windows computer.
Go to the apple, system preferences, network, click ping across the top
type in computers IP address, click ping.
Do you get any replys back?
Try and ping the Mac computer from the Windows computer.
Do you get any replys back?
Please let me know the results?
What Mac operating system are you running.
Here is a document to check your operating system for Mac.

Do you have Mac Filtering then setup on the router?

I've spent over (3) hrs. on the phone with HP and Netgear Tech Support...they were no help.
SUDDENLY....my HP (Wireless) Printer got booted off connection and I've done every troubleshooting from erasing the connection to doing a semi-reset on my HP Printer (on the Display) .
~~~ I've reset the wireless connection and I can go to the display screen and it shows the IP Address and my Router.
I connected my USB to REDO the connection from Wired connection to Wireless Connection. Did the set up.
NOW....it shows my BH1167 Router.....I use my password for set up connection and enter "Detect". It will not detect and tells me unable to find printer.
My Computer Configuration:
IP Address: 192.168.1.12
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
I go to my NETGEAR WIRELESS ROUTER (WNDR-4500) - N900 and go under Basic and Attached Devices:
Here's what it shows.....
My PRINTER Configuration:
IP Address: 192.168.1.16
Mac: 00 : 9C : 02 : D3 : 33 . 61
Now...I've gone to my Computer (CMD) and typed in "Ping" and put 192.168.1.16
The results tell me: Request Timed Out 1oo% loss
Why can't the HP OffjetPrinter 8600 Pro Plus NOT connect to my Printer or recognize the printer???
(As of now...I have the USB attached to get it to work (temporarily) so someone knowledgable out there can fix this horrific problem. I just started this problem with the last (2) days.
I'm still using WINDOWSXP (SP3) because I've never had a reason to upgrade and I can't afford to do massive Windows upgrade right now with all my other documents/files and not ready to (2) months doing other software upgrades.
I'm an "above-average" computer user and have troubleshooted other problems before BUT this problem had me on the phone with HP and Netgear Tech Support with NO Help (other than the Tech Support Agents wanting to SELL me Tech Support Package for $8o for (6) mo. plan....(not affordable) and I struggled through most of the phone call trying to understand their foreign accent.
Can you help me with this? Possibly by phone?
