@KittyK, sorry that you are having this issue.
You will need to put in a color cartridge in order for the printer to work properly.
The printer will not process without the black cartridge and the color cartridge TOGETHER.
The color cartridges mix together with the black to form a true black color. That's why it is telling you, "insert color print cartridge"
