Officejet 5740e
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I bought a refurbished Officejet 5740 today at the local Micro Center. When I plugged the unit in, I get the following message.

Ink Cartridge problem, remove and reinstall cartridges. If message continues replace cartridges.

Of course, I did that but to no avail. In reinstalling the cartidges, I noticed that the label inside the printer says I should use 62 cartridges. However, someone installed 61's instead. Is this the cause of my problem?

I have another Officejet 5470 and some spare 62 cartridges. Should I take out the 61's and install the 62's?

Or is my problem elsewhere?

@Stan17

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer and an error appears saying ink cartridge problem. Upon checking you found that someone has installed the HP 61 cartridges instead of the HP 62 cartridges. Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.

You are correct. This printer uses only HP 62 cartridges (Tricolor and black).

I suggest you to insert the HP 62 cartridges and that should take care of the problem. If the error persists then I suggest you to perform the following steps to fix the issue:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If the error still appears then please perform the steps as described in detail from this link

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Please feel free to let me know the outcome. All the best! 🙂
