What do you do when the clean print head function isn't listed in the control panel like the directions on the website says it is. I'm using Windows 7 program.

I do not have a Deskjet 6840 to check but I think the following works:  with the printer turned on press and hold the power button.  While holding the power button press and release the Cancel (X) button twice, then release the power button.

I tried your suggestion and the printer did make some noises, but they didn't last as long as other print head cleaners. The printer does seem to be printing better, so maybe it worked or maybe it just got better with continued use. Thank you for trying to help me!

The sequence I gave was for the first level cleaning.  There is a more agressive cleaning by pressing the X button twice and then pressing the formfeed button once (more agressive) or two (most agressive) times before releasing the power button.
