Color LaserJet Pro M277DW
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

Firstly I have consulted page 123 of the manual as an answer to a similar question suggested may be a solution. The options mentioned to select the Color tab, and Greyscale, etc, apply only to the Windows driver, not OSX.

I am using Mac OSX.  With the basic driver ready-installed on the Mac there is a Printer Options box with a 'Black & White' tick box is available, this does successfully print using only the black toner, in *non-colour-managed* software, such as Mac Preview and Word, etc.

In Adobe Acrobat, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, even with the 'Black & White' tick box checked, the software continues to print in colour, overriding the saved 'Black and White' choice of the driver.

How can I force the Color LaserJet Pro M277DW to print using the Black toner cartridge only, in PhotoShop / InDesign / Acrobat, colour-managed software - on a Max OSX?

This can be achieved easily with my Epson colour inkjet printers, if I select Black only - I get a black only / greyscale print from Photoshop / Indesign / Acrobat, why is it not a simple option with this HP printer? - surely everyone needs this B&W option, a basic requirement, and should have been in the driver's design from day 1; what option / tick box / process am I overlooking? Why is Photoshop / Indesign / Acrobat overriding the saved Black & White option of the driver?

HELP PLEASE!

-------

NB. the issue is not helped by using the dedicated HP driver downloaded from the HP Drivers page; this looks like it offers more options via a 'web-server' link to the printer, but with this driver the 'Black and White' option is totally removed from Print Options! - nor is B&W available as a setting in the printers' 'web-server' Print page, rendering the HP driver entiely useless!

See here, this is using the dedicated downloaded driver, the B&W option has gone! - meaning I can't even print in B&W with non-colour-managed software (Mac Preview etc)...

After a day of experimentation, the issue was a subtle detail when selecting Add Printer.

Maybe this will be of help to others with the same problem when using Mac OSX...

When adding a printer in the Use drop-down, the default is Secure AirPrint, this removes the option to print in B&W! - and removes other options!  Got knows why it's the default.

Make sure you select the named printer on this dropdown - the M277dw - as highlighted below.

not AirPrint.jpg

The printer will then work with all settings available - and will work wirelessly (I assumed the Use, would need to the AirPrint - but it doesn't - as this also removes features; select the actual name of the printer).

Once this 'Use' is correctly set, the grey-scale option is available via Printer Options in the app you're printing from, inclusing Photoshop, etc, phew.  I've also saved this as a BW preset...

Hello! I am so close... Very helpful post, I am using Yosemite and a new M277DW. I do not have the printer listed in "Use." Installed and removed several times with Apple.
