I have 3 computers with USB wireless adapters. There is no central router. I am trying to connect them wirelessly to a LaserJet Pro M402dw. No matter what I try, it will not connect.
I can see the printer in the list of connections on all 3 computers. I cannot print at all.
If I try to install the printer software using the CD it gets to the point where it wants me to temporarily plug in a USB cable. Then it wastes time for about 10-15 minutes and eventually gives up, saying that it can't find the network settings.
If I try to connect using the pushbotton method on the control panel of the printer, it looks for a router with a WPS button.
What can I do to wirelessly connect these computers to this printer?
Thank you.

A bit confused here. Are the usb wireless adapter being used to access the internet and communicate between computer or what. If using for the interent how are they receiving the interent service since you have to log in someplace. If just have a wireless modem with no ports then you need to have the printer connected via usb cable to one of the computers so you can add the printer to the wireless network with the code provided by your provider which will be the same as the code you used on each computer. Once that is done the printer will have a wireless address just as your computers and you use the ip address of the printer's wireless connection to add the printer to each computer.

The USB wireless adapters were bought specifically for this purpose, but they can access the internet with no problem. To connect to the internet all I had to do was click "connect" on the WiFi connection in the list. It's right under the printer.
I'm assuming that these wireless usb adapters are simply acting as modems. I also assumed that I would be able to connect directly to the printer using the192.168.1.x range of IP addresses.
I don't want to connect to the printer through the internet/intranet. I want to connect directly. I've been able to do this with another printer in the past. It's as if the printer acts as its own router. You can access a control panel when you direct a browser to 192.168.1.1 after connecting directly to it over WiFi.
Does WiFi Direct not work with windows? Do I need a separate router?

Would it help to say that I can when I see the printer in the list of WiFi connections and I click "Connect" that it says "Connected"?
I mean the adapter/modem can see and "connect" to the printer. I just can't seem to be able to set up the printer to where it sees and connects to the computer.

So on another computer I'm able to do this:
Press Connect on the Wifi connection list and Connect to the printer.
Run the installation software and choose "No let me configure wirelss myself"
I choose the printer on the list, which only shows the one printer.
Then it installs the software and and says it will print a test page.
The test page ends up in the printer spool and never prints.
So I can get all the way to the point of printing without the print job being sent to the printer.
It's like the software thinks it's connected, but it's not.
The adapter has a pushbutton/PIN option, although the pushbutton is "virtual." Is there a way to use the PIN? I've tried using the pushbutton method and it didn't take.
I'm trying now to follow the directions on this page:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/wireless-printing-center/wireless-direct.html
I'm trying to figure out how to see DIRECT-xx*-HP-< printer model > instead of HP-Print-xx*-< printer model >, but I don't know how to turn on the direct thing using the printer control panel. Doesn't seem to be an option.
