OfficeJet 6700 Premium
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I have a HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium, model number H711n, product number CN583A.  It is connected to an Apple MacBook Pro running OSX El Capitan via a USB2 cable.  All 4 cartridges have plenty of ink.

The machine suddenly will not scan or allow me to load new firmware as a possible fix for this.  I can see multiple complaints about this failure for 6600/6700 machines on the HP Forums, all unanswered.  If I try to scan, the screen says "Unable to scan, copy or send a fax".

I have done the usual "Turn on machine, pull out power cable, wait 3 minutes, turn back on etc" routine at least a dozen times and it does not change its status.  I have also done the "Restore Factory Defaults" procedure via the 6700 display more than once.

When I try to launch new firmware for the machine, the HP software tells me on my laptop that the 6700 is in "Error state and needs to be reflashed".  The HP software most unhelpfully gives NO SOLUTION for how that reflashing can be achieved.  So why tell me the machine needs to be reflashed and then not tell me how to do it?

This error state/reflash fault is not answered anywhere on the HP support website either.

What's needed is a complete wipe and refresh.  How does one fix this problem?

Hello,

Please click HERE to access the steps that should resolve the issue .

1>While the printer is ON, unplug the power cord from back of the printer and then Computer.

2>Power off the Wireless Router.

3>Wait for 60 seconds.

4>Now plug in the power cord to printer only.

5> Try making a COPY.  If COPY is successfull, then uninstall the printer software from you MAC computer and then download the printer software from http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

I've done what you described and there is no difference.  It will not copy because after switching back on and making a few noises, the 6700 display is still saying "Unable to scan, copy or send a fax".

I don't know what your suggestion of turning the Wireless Router off will do - the 6700 is connected via USB....?  I turned it off anyway - no difference.

I had downloaded and installed a fresh set of drivers before posting - no difference.  I have also downloaded the Firmware update for this model onto my Mac - but when I try to load it, the HP Firmware Updater unhelpfully tells me there is a problem and doesn't offer any solution, neither does the HP website.  Here is an image of the message on my Mac;

What I need is the method by which the 6700 can be completely rebooted.  It is locked in its error state and no amount of power on/power off fiddling around will dislodge it.

It is very disappointing that HP do not provide a solution on their website to a fault they clearly expected to happen because they have the error message all configured for the display.

My 6700 is still completely unusable and there's no solution from HP as to how to fix it.  No amount of turning off and on, unplugging etc etc will alter its state.  It needs a factory reset command but HP choose not to give that helpful option to paying customers.

I can see many other people on the forums with 6600 & 6700 models whose machines have frozen in exactly the same way.  They didn't get any answers either.  So this was just another failed HP model series where customers are abandoned to regret their purchases at leisure.

If you have found this forum page because you have an OfficeJet 6600 or 6700 that is locked in Error State and will not even take the Firmware Update using the official HP Firmware Updater software, I am sorry to have to tell you that it appears the OFFICIAL HP SOLUTION is to throw your machine away.  Yes, go and locate a skip in a nearby street and throw the machine into it with as much force as you can muster.

The 2 advantages of this solution are;

1   You won't have to give all the problems that the machine has caused you another thought.  You'll simply buy another printer and swear that - this time - you won't expect more than 2 months' usage out of it.

2   You will get a little more exercise, as in future you'll be walking straight past all those shiny new HP printers in the shop because you have vowed never to buy again from a company that doesn't provide simple solutions on its website to known problems.
