I have unplugged it and tried many times.  One day it was printing just fine then suddenly it just decided not to.  How do I troubleshoot the problem and then fix the problem.  REALLY like this printer and want to fix it.  Somebody out there must be able to help!  It was hardwired to my computer and I downloaded the latest driver software from HP.  When I power it up the display lights up and I hear it apparently booting up or doing whatever it is doing.  I just cannot do anything.  Can't copy anything or use any of the button fuctions.  The control panel buttons just stopped working?  Somebody HELP!!

@SeabeeSpringer,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the buttons on your HP Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One Printer are not responding.

This issue could occur if the printer is in error state.

Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.

1.Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
2.Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
3.With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
4.Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
5.Wait at least 60 seconds.
6.Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
7.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
8.Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
9.Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Rainbow23!

Thank you for your reply.  I executed the steps you recommended and unfortunately they did not solve the problem?

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Recommend you connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable.

Download the firmware update for your printer from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the printer.

If the issue persists after the firmware update, please contact our phone support for any upgrade or service options available for your printer.

Thank you for your response.  You instructed to download the firmware update to the printer.  Last week I went to the drivers site and downloaded the latest software but no where was there any mention of firmware software, just the latest driver.  Is the firmware (from the download) somewhere to be found on my computer or was it automatically updated to the printer?  If that was the case, then it did not alleviate the problem or the firmware was not updated to the printer.  Just for your info, I have a computer science degree so I like to think I am versed in the basics.

I also went to the "contacthp"  site and entered the printer and upon clicking on the icon I was presented with an error code:  404 No Content Available.  I let HP discover printers and it found the L7780.  Upon clicking on the icon I received the same error message.  I put in another HP printer (Officejet Pro 8600 Plus) which is working like a champ, and received the same error message.  I concluded it is not just the L7780 that produces the 404 error message.

So i'm in a bit of quandry as to what to do next since I am not able to access the form to select my contact options?  I even tried to find a repair facility as a last resort in the DFW area, with no luck.  Like I indicated in my original message I really like this printer; it is a real workhorse.  I would really like to fix it.  Just for info;  when I turn it on the display lights up, the on-off switch flashes and I hear the carriage moving back and forth or whatever it does.  After that, I am unable to use the control buttons.

I hope there is a solution here someplace!

Thank you,

SeabeeSpringer

Thanks for the reply, found a firmware update for your printer on our website. Click here to download. However, the last firmware update was made available in 2008.

If the web page is not loading on your computer to find the contact number for customer care, please try a different browser.

Are you located in North America?

Keep me posted.

Thank you again for your reply.  I downloaded the firmware and attempted to update.  I discovered that communication with the Printer does not exist.  I let the update run for 20 minutes and it eventually came back with a "Not Responding" message.  It would appear there is some kind of hardware issue.  This would confirm somewhat when I would attempt to send a test print job to the printer.  It would appear a new printer would be the best option.  I still believe it is something simple because it is an HP printer and they don't quit!  Is there any hardware test or procedure I can perform.  I am quite handy with the tools and do have same to remove panels or whatever.

Thank you again!

I want to thank you for all your help and assistance in attempting to solve the issues I am having with the L7780 printer.  You are an exceptional representative of the HP support team.  In my years in the IT environment I have interfaced with many HP representatives and support personnel and have always had very positive experiences.  I only wish we could have solved the problem but I also realize the printer is 10 plus years old and probably needs to be retired which is only logical.  It just validates the quality of HP printers.  It gave me great service and until now, I never had one issue or problem with it.  The one thing I will miss is the photo functionality; insert the photo chip and print the photo.  Anyway, thank you again for all your assistance and thank you to HP for having you on board!

Cheers,

@SeabeeSpringer,

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.

I also appreciate your time and patience.

This could be a hardware issue with the unit. Hence you may upgrade your printer with the latest model.

Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

It was a pleasure assisting you. You have a good day ahead.
