Hello,
My school district just purchased a LaserJet 500 Color M551 printer. I set up the IP port on our print server, and manually entered the IP settings on the printer. This includes the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. However, the default gateway changes itself to the same thing as what I entered for the IP address as soon as I leave the JetDirect menu on the printer.
After this, I tried changing it through the web browser interface. So I changed it to pull a DHCP IP address, and browsed to the printer and changed it from the browser to manaul IP. After I clicked save, I could no longer browse to the printer based on the IP I assigned it. I went into the printer menu at the printer itself and found that again the default gateway changed itself back to the IP address I assigned to the printer.
Because of this, the printer is essentially useless, because nobody on the network can print to it. Has anybody dealt with this before? Is it some easy setting that I am missing? I am a network administrator and have set up dozens of printers before and have never come across this before. Any input would be appreciated.

Just an update for anybody that is looking at this: When I print the configuration page, under the IPv4 settings it shows an error message stating INVALID GATEWAY ADDRESS. Below that it shows the IP of the default gateway that I attempted to enter. Then below that it shows the IP of the printer, the subnet mask, and the default gateway (that it changed to be the same as the IP address). Here are the subnet and gateway that I am using:
255.255.0.0
10.1.1.1
After seeing this message, I tried changing the subnet mask to 255.0.0.0 and I no longer received the error message. However, because I changed the subnet mask, it is not on the same network as the rest of our network, so it is still essentially useless. But when I change the TCP/IP settings to DHCP instead of manual, it pulls the subnet mask and gateway that I entered in the first place (when I get the INVALID GATEWAY ADDRESS message).
I called HP support and they had me wipe the disk and reload the firmware, and when it came back up the same problems happened. Its almost like the printer (or the JetDirect card) is too smart for its own good and won't allow a subnet mask and gateway combination that is not a normal combination. Any ideas out there?
