I have a DJ 500. A few months ago I replaced the belt that moves the print carriage. It's in good shape. A few dats ago I replaced the service station. Part was from HP. I was able to print 7 or 8 pages of plans. Then I would get an error message that I had a paper jam. But I dont. When I turn the printer the paper moves fine as does the print carraige. I can form feed and cut no problem. But when the file has been processed and it's time to print I get the message. Any Ideas.

If the carriage doesn't move smoothly back and forth it can give a paper jam error, make sure the shaft is cleaned and lubricated. The other area of concern is the encoder strip, the thin metal/plastic strip that runs through the carriage and attaches at each end of the frames. That strip has timing marks on it that the carriage reads so it knows where it is at at all times. Sometimes that strip just needs to be cleaned of ink, but if it has been cleaned by something other than water, it is possible that some of the timing marks are now gone. This will generally give an 86:01 error code or give a paper jam message. My guess would be you have a bad encoder strip.

TJ, thanks for he reply. The bar is clean and lubricated and I have cleaned the encoder strip with warm water, nothing else. I have moved the print carraige by hand from right to left and back, very smooth. I am in Memphis and the closest HP approved tech is in Little Rock, 120 miles away. So I am trying to fix this my self rather than pay $500 for him to come over. I want to thank you for your reply andmaybe hope you or others have some other ideas.

I would suggest you take a good look at that encoder strip to make sure all the marks are visible, and I'd also re-check all your work from replacing the belt, its possible there is a pinched wire/cable when re-installing the right hand frame work after the belt replacement. I am assuming you've verified that media sensor works properly?

Are you getting System Error 86:01, Possible paper jam. Or just a paper jam error msg.
If you can provide the exact error message it is appreciated.
If the error code is 86:01, then it is scan axis error, May be the carriage is stuck. But you have mentioned that the form feed and cut button works fine (thats weird).
Remove the paper from the printer, Turn the printer ON without paper. If the error appears, you might need to check if the carriage assembly & belt is fine. If there is no error message then try changing the media & see what happens.
If it is a normal paper jam error message, Check if there is any paper stuck underneath the carriage assembly or service station area.

Please check the firmware version of the printer, if it is old then update the firmware.
Also check the condition of Printheads,Clean and reseat and then perform the alignment and check.
