The patch worked like a charm to allow my new 64 bit Win 7 desktop to talk to my sentimental favorite 722C printer.  Thanks.

Question:  The align print cartridges service doesn't seem to be included in the available Win 7 driver and the HP support site indicates there's no work around.  I still have access to an old Win XP laptop that has the shipped-with-the-printer 722C driver on it.  If I temporarily connect the laptop to align the print cartridges, will the printer "remember" the settings when I reconnect it to my desktop PC?  That is, are the cartridge alignment results stored by the printer or by the PC-resident driver?

Thanks for the help.

I have the very same problem.  I cannot use the printer maintenance at all on W7.  Hope it can be solved.

For most HP printers the alignment is stored in the printer's firmware, but I do not think this is the case for the host based printers like the Deskjet 722c.

That said, alignment is generally not an issue for these printers, in most cases the default is correct.  Are you having issues with alignment?

It would not hurt to try alignment with the XP machine.  If you get a chance to do this please post your results back here.

Absolutely NOT. There's  no patch that will work with Windows 8/8.1 64 bit.  If you have 32 bit and most do not, it should work without the patch.

I am not sure who you are replying to.  The user here indicated he has the patch working in a Windows 8.1 x64 machine with a Deskjet 720C connected by network to a Windows 7 machine.  I have not been able to duplicate this with a Windows 8.1 x64 machine with a printer directly connected and have not yet had a chance to try with the networked connection.

If you have a 32 bit version of Windows 8 or 8.1 the driver will work without a patch, I have verified this with Windows 8 and a Deskjet 720.

I set up the DeskJet 722C as a network printer on the laptop running Windows XP and after loading the driver on the laptop, the align ink cartridge service was available.  I went throught the align cartridge protocol and the end of protocol test page looked great printing from the XP laptop as well as printing a page from my Win 7 professional, 64 bit desktop.

I would say that my experience maybe indicates that the alignment adjustments are captured by the printer firmware and used regardless of the PC sending the print file except the pre-alignment prints from the Win 7 desktop weren't really noticeably misaligned anyway.  If things get out of alignment, I'll re-align and see what happens and post the results.

I originally raised the issue because I didn't want to buy a $40 ink cartridge for the printer only to find I couldn't align the new cartridge to produce acceptable quality prints.

Thanks again for posting the patch for the driver and your interest.

Peter,

There is currently no patch for Windows 8 or 8.1 x64.  I am working on a solution but not making much progress, if something can be done it will be announced in this thread.
