I have a deskjet F4480 which was making loud noises during carriage movement, and not printing well.  Kudos to someone in another forum who ascribed this issue to a "broken carriage" which helped.

I was able to solve the issue as follows:  Remove the 4 stardrive screws holding the scanner and control panel top cover to the base of the printer.  Unplug the two ribbon cables  connecting the scanner and contro panel.

I observed that the right hand side of the printhead/cartridge carriage was some what out of kilter, to use a technical term--the grey part was sprung somewhat out of the blacker part, presumably during some ham-fisted cartridge changing operation.

I was able, with some careful prying and levering, to push the parts back into their proper alignment, and the printer is now back to its usual quiet(er) mode of operation, and quality of printing.

From searches elsewhere, I see this problem is not uncommon, so I thought I'd take the trouble to post my fix here.

Hi,

I am getting a loud racheting noise when the carriage hits the right end buffer. Is this what you were getting Bill?

If so, I am struggling to find the parts that you said were misaligned. Are they on the moving head carriage or the static bit of the carriage mechanism? Or  was it in the head cleaning tray? What shape and material was was the grey part? I don't seem to have any grey parts on my printer that I can see.

Did you ever find an answer to the racheting noise from the right side?  I am experiencing the same issue.... Thanks.

No, I never resolved it. HP printers are cheap, so it was pointless trying to fix it.

I have the same issue, I found that the cartridge cleaning tray was getting suck back and not returning forward. A plastic piece of the locking mechanism for the tray had broken.  I can move the tray back forward and power up the printer. The loud clicking stops. But then i send a print job to it and it clicks again. I removed the top to find the try moved back again. I have epoxied it back on. I will let you know if it works. Probably wont.
