I would like to stop it from broadcasting completely.

This is an old post, but still the top result in a Google search. Here's a method to disable the SSID broadcast that worked for me:
- connect the printer to the wireless network by running the hp wireless config utility
- print a config page (printing preferences > services)
- use a browser to navigate to the ip address listed on the config page
- on the hp printer's page navigate to networking > wireless direct setup > and disable it
Now you shouldn't see the printer's direct print name (SSID) in your available network lists, and can hold the wi-fi button for five seconds to turn off the wireless if desired.

We are using a P1109w and with wireless enabled the Direct Print feature is disabled and we still see the SSID.
This is a MICR check printer in our Accounting department. It's mind-boggling why this has Direct Printing in the first place and simply brain dead that there isn't security on it.
How do I use this as a wifi printer but turn Direct Print OFF? If we can't do this the printer is junk to us.
