HP LaserJet Pro M402dne

We’re experiencing issues with printer HP LaserJet Pro M402dne in our network.

We have more than 80 printers with the same configuration and different versions of firmware in one subnet.

  • The problem occurs every time a printer gets a new IP from DHCP. After that the printer sends a NBNS-package to the broadcast address of the subnet.  “Name query NB Workgroup”
    • See attached screenshot frame 2416
  • After that NBNS-package all other printers are sending ARP broadcast request (“Who has $IP? Tell $OwnIP”). The printer who has the IP $IP responds to every ARP request (“$IP is at $MAC)
    • See attached screenshot frame 2417cf
  • According to our security guidelines all of our switches are configured to block this huge amount of ARP requests (max: 15 requests/port/second)
    • As workaround we increased the amount of allowed ARP requests per second and port to 100
  • We’ve already tried to disable Netbios/WINS by setting the value pri-wins-svr to 0.0.0.0 on every printer. Unfortunately without success

Please advise how Netbios/WINS can be disabled on HP printers especially on Laserjet 402dne or how we can avoid that the printers are responding with ARP request to the NBNS queries on the workgroup.

Furthermore, you need to know that implementing WINS is no option for us.

Have you considered setting up address reservations so that the printers always get the same address. Or you can set the IP address manually and this disables the WINS settings.
