My only stumbling block to signing up for instant ink is whether the printer needs to be continuouisly connected to the internet. Does the system work if the printer is connected occasionally ie when it is switched on and printing? I do not wish to keep my printer permanetly  switched on at the mains, is this ok for the instant ink system? Thanks

Hi,

HP Instant Ink monitors your ink cartridge levels so replacement ink cartridges can be sent to you when you need them. When your printer is not connected to the Internet for a day or two, depending on how much is being printed, monitoring is interrupted, and one of the following error messages might display on your computer or printer:

  • Connect Printer to Update HP Instant Ink Status
  • If the printer is not connected to HP Connected you will be unable to print soon
  • Cannot print - Press OK to connect printer to update status
  • Press OK to connect printer so replacement cartridge can be ordered
  • Press OK to connect printer to update status

Thanks for reply

So as long as the printer can connect to HP's servers when it is swithced  on and the ink status can be updated  there is no need to leave it on all the time, is this correct?

HP Recommended

Yes, as long as the time that it's switched off doesn't exceed  more than a few days.

Sorry , but what happens after a few days? What if I go on holiday?  this is starting to look like a bit of a deal breaker tbh.

Hi,

If you're offline for a few days/weeks, you'll get some messaging to reconnect - upon your return from holidays, when you re-connect, you'll contimue to be able to print again without isssue.
